Quick Question

I’ve been looking for a three-column theme for some time.  I saw this one, Simplicity by Teli Design and liked it, simply because it’s got three columns and it works.  But I like the red of the other, and I like the width of the blog entry column.
I’m thinking of leaving this one up here [...]

As an anthropologist, one of the most valuable things I learned was to judge other people’s cultures by their own standards, and not by my own.  The reason for that is that all groups of people evolve ways of life that work, more or less, for them.  What we call “culture” is what results when [...]

Last night the site was down. The whole server that provides me the space for this site (vDeck) was down, and they were flying technicians from Arizona to L.A. to fix it. They’d told us originally that it would be back up late today, but here it is, 9:31 a.m., and it’s back [...]

This post and its comments raise some interesting questions about Bermudian homophobia that could be floated here as well. (A Limey in Bermuda)
Barbados makes plans to process and manufacture Sea Island cotton. (My Barbados Blog)
Guyana-Gyal meditates on family and emigration. (Guyana)
The Bajan Deputy Prime Minister calls for regulation of blogs and call-in shows. (The [...]

I have an uncle who was once Bishop of Nassau, The Bahamas, and the Turks and Caicos Islands. When I was a child, he was Father Eldon, priest of West End, Grand Bahama. I never saw him. He came to Nassau on one or two occasions a year only, because he was [...]

Some time ago (end of June, I do believe) I attended a book launch at Chapter One, COB’s bookstore.  The book was Hezekiah’s Independence by Freeport writer Keith A. Russell.
Now Keith Russell (known formally as Dr. Keith Russell) is the author of three novels (Hezekiah is his third) and is one of my favourite Bahamian [...]

I was sent here by Rick Lowe today.  Looks like an interesting site.
I have no idea whether I’ll agree with its stuff or not, but that’s not really the point, is it?  It definitely looks like it’s worth following for a while.
The point is to read.
And to work to fight what Michael Shermer noted.

Caribbean Bloggers

I’ve got a couple of links to bloggers from the region in my Blogroll, but I’ve just discovered (through Global Voices) The Pan Collective.  It’s like Bahama Pundit and Blog Bahamas, only regional, with bloggers from Aruba, Barbados, Grenada, Jamaica, Martinique, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Check it out.

And to know what it isn’t.
On Global Voices, a lengthy translation of a Chinese blog is featured.  The purpose:  to point out the lack of freedom that still exists in China, where the state has the power to intimidate and uses it, even (or especially) to the point of attempting to silence legitimate questions being [...]

Michael Schermer over at Scientific American has written an article that describes what happens to the brains of politicians when they talk. Here’s an excerpt:
During the run-up to the 2004 presidential election, while undergoing an fMRI bran scan, 30 men–half self-described as “strong” Republicans and half as “strong” Democrats–were tasked with assessing statements by [...]
