Nicolette, an excellent critique, I hope all the Junkanooers will hear you, especially the emerging generations.Your discussion of the music is right on. The season of sped-up tempo has apparently and thankfully come to a close, and a new season has begun, with a return to authentic rythms . Can we hope for a renewed social voice for Junkanoo?. We must hope, and, we must ask it of them! They're out there, the ones who are remembering the part of the carnival that is about having something vital to say, something from the gut, something the rest of us need to hear, think about, and respond to. I wish for them the courage to create themes that break silences, challenge taboos, and ask difficult questions. It seems to me that Breaking the Silence is what the tradition has always been about at its heart. I look forward to the return of the conscious Junkanoo voice. And no, its not too soon to rejoice, a bit of hopeful optimism is in order. My boys went to both parades this year and a good time was had all around, reporting that "they were the best in years."
Thanks for all the great writing this year Nico, and Bright Blessings to you and yours for 2007.
