Well, the new Seven Wonders of the World have been announced.
Not surprisingly, the Caribbean hasn’t been included. Maybe one of the reasons is that we tend to think pretty small, with the result that we haven’t created anything of the magnitude of the edifices listed here. Maybe there are other reasons too, but let’s just make a note of the fact for now.
Bajegirl has chosen to rectify the oversight by posting her Seven Wonders of the Caribbean. They are cool, but they’re all natural.
Needless to say, The Bahamas has not been included in that list. So let me just open this thread up for suggestions, and provide just three with which to begin:
The Tongue of the Ocean
The Andros Barrier Reef
Deans Blue Hole, Long Island (words don’t express)

Anybody want to play?

I’ve just found out about another Bahamian wonder, which may not yet be on the global radar — the Sawmill Sinkhole in Abaco, Bahamas, where the richest fossil finds in the entire Caribbean have been uncovered over the past year or two. Some relevant links include:

Because my middle name should be “nitpicker”, from BajeGirl’s list, Port Royal in Jamaica (or the ruins thereof) are man-made. But I would probably have replaced Port Royal with the Mayan pyramids in Belize(assuming that Belize counts as Caribbean). The Belizean and Bahamian barrier reefs and blue holes could duke it out for supremacy!
I’d also have included the Boiling Lake in Dominica, instead of the Bermuda Triangle, since, as a Bermudan friend (quite rightly) told me, Bermuda is not in the Caribbean.
Curious about why you say “Needless to say” about the non-inclusion of the Bahamas? Do you think that the Bahamas are not seen by other Caribbean people as being really Caribbean?
Titilayo, thanks for reminding me about Port Royal, and the Mayan pyramids.
To answer your last question, yes, sort of. Most of us (Bahamians included) tend to see the Bahamas as not being really Caribbean. (Our backing away from hosting CARIFESTA could be evidence of that).
It’s a blindness that persists among us all. Personally, I’d include even Bermuda, though, as well as South Florida and New Orleans under the Caribbean cultural cloak — and parts of Colombia, and lots of Venezuela, and …
So you see where I stand.
I’m happy to see my (mostly unresearched) post has generated discussion on what could be considered our Caribbean wonders. However, don’t read too much into the exclusion of the Bahamas…no malice was intended! I’m just not familiar with that part of the Caribbean at all, and was highlighting the areas I’ve actually visited or heard about.
It was just an opportunity to get everyone thinking and discussing, so fait accompli!
I’ve enjoyed reading about the sites in the Bahamas that you mentioned, so I guess we’re doing pur part for CSME
Blessings.
It is great to see that the funest blue hole ever is onn such a website. It nice to know that people can get to know that the bahamas has it wonders to but natural.
