A year or so ago, I was in a gathering of people where someone asserted that Bahamians would prefer to be Americans (the 53rd state, it was said — ahem) than to be members of the Caribbean Region.
I have to tell you, that scares me deeply.
Not all Americans are this stupid, but the fact that people who are can get on national television makes one wonder.
This is, apparently, for real.
I apologize to any American friends I may have offended. But really.

Getting on TV doesn’t require smarts. It requires looks. Smart, ugly people are minority presences on the boob tube. Is that a good thing?
Way to state the obvious.
But here’s the thing: looks = good. But why should the good-looking have to open their mouths?
Specially in this case.
That’s hilarious. The presenter made a few remarks that I’m sure he would regret later but I did like one comment he made:
” a woman doesn’t want a man’s opinion, just her own, played back in a deeper voice”
*chuckle* – I shouldn’t laugh, I know…
I respectfully suggest that anybody who thinks that The Bahamas should be a part of the U.S. pay attention to news out of Puerto Rico.
There’s a really easy answer to that question. “Prosperity.”
As a US state, the Bahamas would have access to the world’s highest-paid labor market, lowest-cost array of consumer goods, and most-favored reserve currency. At current income levels, Bahamanians would receive far more in federal support than they would pay in taxes.
And who can argue that having 2 US senators and 1 US congressman would give these islands far more play on the world stage than the whole current cabinet of a sovereign nation does now?
What? Culture? Did I hear someone mention culture? Ah c’mon folks, is culture worth impoverishing a whole nation for? Ask yourself, how often does Sidney Poitier visit the Bahamas?
I assume everyone knows that last comment was tongue in cheek. A robust free trade agreement, including trade in labor and services, between the Bahamas and the US would accomplish all of the prosperity needed.
Fair enough Bob. I asked for that.
the pot calling the kettle black I see Dr. Bethel unless of course you haven’t heard our illustrious Miss Bahamas speak?

if it wasn’t so sad…
Dear oh dear.
Oh dear.
I am just smiling. Trying to defend the clip you inserted and the link from BT would be criminal.
Beauty…what a thing…
If Bahamaians want to know what the Bahamas would probably look like with respect to being a U.S. State, they do not have to look very far.Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands, although,in essence not essentially American states, they are nonetheless American dependencies. An in depth political, economic, social, legal, and cultural analysis/interpretation of these two societies may be instructive for Bahamaians who harbor or advance views of the Bahamas becoming a state. Also, instructive is certain parts or areas of the American south, especially, with respect to the political and economics of race.
Na, na, na, na,na
Here’s a little something I wrote back in the 80s that is of the same genre:
“There was much criticism of TV-13 in its early days for a lack of educational programming. One response was the 1979 quiz show ‘It’s Academic’, which pitted teams of high school students against each other, becoming quite a hit…
The students had to say what type of meat came from what animal – as in pork from pig. All went well until St Andrew’s was asked to trace the ancestry of veal: “Cow†ventured one student. “Wrong†declared the quizmaster …â€veal comes from lambâ€.
And on the strength of that incorrect answer the championship went to Government High. Representatives of the Ministry of Education (which produces the show) stepped out to award a set of encyclopaedias to the winning team.

The thing about our miss Bahamas Is that she is emulating the Amerian beauty queens to some extent. The whole thing is an American model…Sort of highlighting What Dr. Bethel has said.
