The thing about our miss Bahamas Is that she is emulating the Amerian beauty queens to some extent. The whole thing is an American model...Sort of highlighting What Dr. Bethel has said.

Oh. Dear. Heaven.

Thanks for the input, Larry.

Would that we could say with confidence that it is different today!

Na, na, na, na,na

Here's a little something I wrote back in the 80s that is of the same genre:

"There was much criticism of TV-13 in its early days for a lack of educational programming. One response was the 1979 quiz show ‘It’s Academic’, which pitted teams of high school students against each other, becoming quite a hit...

The students had to say what type of meat came from what animal – as in pork from pig. All went well until St Andrew’s was asked to trace the ancestry of veal: “Cow” ventured one student. “Wrong” declared the quizmaster ...”veal comes from lamb”.

And on the strength of that incorrect answer the championship went to Government High. Representatives of the Ministry of Education (which produces the show) stepped out to award a set of encyclopaedias to the winning team.

If Bahamaians want to know what the Bahamas would probably look like with respect to being a U.S. State, they do not have to look very far.Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands, although,in essence not essentially American states, they are nonetheless American dependencies. An in depth political, economic, social, legal, and cultural analysis/interpretation of these two societies may be instructive for Bahamaians who harbor or advance views of the Bahamas becoming a state. Also, instructive is certain parts or areas of the American south, especially, with respect to the political and economics of race.

I assume everyone knows that last comment was tongue in cheek. A robust free trade agreement, including trade in labor and services, between the Bahamas and the US would accomplish all of the prosperity needed.

There's a really easy answer to that question. "Prosperity."

As a US state, the Bahamas would have access to the world's highest-paid labor market, lowest-cost array of consumer goods, and most-favored reserve currency. At current income levels, Bahamanians would receive far more in federal support than they would pay in taxes.

And who can argue that having 2 US senators and 1 US congressman would give these islands far more play on the world stage than the whole current cabinet of a sovereign nation does now?

What? Culture? Did I hear someone mention culture? Ah c'mon folks, is culture worth impoverishing a whole nation for? Ask yourself, how often does Sidney Poitier visit the Bahamas?
