No, I'm not saying that a little bit of corruption is acceptable -- and I'm not touching the second one.

What I'm thinking is that (a) thank God it's not worse, but (b) also we may be on the way to getting it worse - witness what it's like in Zimbabwe.

I don't know about slippery slopes. In our email exchange I challenged you to suggest to me a system in which no corruption exists. I've lived in the UK and Canada and am immersed like everyone else in this country in media produced in the US and I haven't found it yet. But what is important is that corruption is punished when it is revealed in the above places. We need to do the same here.

I also believe that we are heading towards a situation that could be more and more like Zimbabwe, and we don't even have a clue. We talk about it a lot, but we imagine that the solution is changing the politicians in charge. Believe me when I tell you it's not.

But I'll be writing an article on this topic soon enough.

Cheers and thanks for stopping by!

Dear Nicolette:
It appears to me you are saying a little bit of corruption is acceptable?
That's like saying it's okay for a school girl to be a little bit pregnant is it not?
Every Bahamian pays for the services we are supposed to be getting from government agencies through our taxes. "Tipping" an official to get a phone line or electricity hook up or retrieve your documents from a government department is unacceptable.
I firmly believe our acceptance of these 'small' things is what is adding to our societal decay.
