Hanna, Ike, Josephine

Guyana doesn’t get hurricanes.

We do.

I’m sitting here, a tropical storm watch active for the area, while three storms line up and take aim on us.

Of them, the one that worries me the most is Ike — a decent Cat Four hurricane currently heading straight for Nassau.

I’ll keep you posted.

Cheers.

Is there any reports of bad weather coming to the Bahamas October 26-30, 2008? Can you buy tickets to tours or snorkling when you get off cruise ships at a certin place that isn’t to expensive? What is the best things to see and do there that you can get to easily? I really want to see Atlantis, what is the cost and how can I get over there so I don’t have to break the bank?

    Thank you very much,
    Rhonda

    Answers I can give you:

The best things to see and do that you can get to easily: I would recommend walking through town. Go to Fort Fincastle, which is straight up the hill from where the cruise ships dock, up the Queen’s Staircase, and at the top of that hill. When you come down, walk along Bay Street to the Hilton British Colonial Hotel and keep walking till you come to West Street. Walk up that hill and go to the National Art Gallery at the top, and then visit Educulture just behind it. If you feel like walking, keep going west (the port is north) until you come to Fort Charlotte on the south side of the road and the Fish Fry on the north.

As to whether you can get tours etc inexpensively, I can’t answer that.

To go to Atlantis, you can take a ferry from the dock. I don’t know what the cost is. I would advise that you do that after you see one or the other or both of the forts if you’re looking for a bargain, though. The entrance fee to the Art Gallery is $5. The entrance fee to Fort Charlotte is no more than $5 if you go in on foot, and there is currently no entrance fee to Fort Fincastle (though when it is established it won’t be as much as Fort Charlotte’s fee — Charlotte’s a much bigger fort).

If you take a taxi or a tour bus you will pay through the nose.

If you buy your tour on the ship you will pay through the nose.

If you stick to Bay Street and travel with friends you should be fine. However, check out these sites for some helpful advice:
