Grand Valley Update

So Philip’s been there since Tuesday, learning a little about western Michigan as well as about GVSU itself. He’s held two auditions for Horse — one yesterday (Friday) and one today (Saturday) — and tomorrow (Sunday) are callbacks. He said that there are maybe 40 people coming back for a callback.

His audition was held along with the auditions for the other fall plays, and he anticipates that there’ll be a little competition for at least one of the people who have auditioned. He’s not sure whether he’ll make up his mind about all the cast tomorrow, but he hopes to have the main speaking parts — Son, Mother, Old Fool, Lawyer, and maybe Neighbour and Other cast before he comes home.

So cool, as a student of mine once used to say.

Yes, it should be an interesting day. As Nico mentioned, there are 40 plus people who have been called back. There was a fear, by some of the faculty here, that I might not have been able to get as big a cast as I needed since their biggest casts are usually around 12 people. They are actually in rehearsal right now for “Hamlet” and that’s a pretty good size cast. I think the real fear was getting a black cast the size I needed. We settled on the fact that the casting for “Horse” will be color blind so It looks as if I can cast the show from the people that I’ve seen and I’m going to now have to make a decision on just how many of the people, coming out today, I will use.

There are not as many men as women and I know that some of the men who I auditioned are needed for the two other plays so that might present a challenge. By this evening I hope to know what the final cast might look like and then tomorrow I’ll be heading back home for a few weeks before rehearsals begin.

On a lighter side note about Nico’s post and not to totally be a nit picker but ‘Old Fool’ is not one of the “main speaking parts”. One of the main parts yes but “speaking”, no. Sorry but I had to get that in there.
