Well, after three days of auditions the casting for Winston Saunders’ play You Can Lead A Horse To Water has been completed. It is a diverse cast, which I assume fits into the cultural diversity program at GVSU.
The cast will be some thirty strong, once the musical director has identified one final singer. People of color make up about a quarter of the cast.
I knew that I would be dealing with color blind casting so we have a black Mother, Neighbour, Wife, Witness, Boss and the Other Neighbour is latina. I think that there is also a black female member of the Jury. The cast is about two thirds female, as men seem to be hard to come by around here, especially men who can sing. Two of the men who have been cast have already been forbidden to sing in this production.
Some of the students have been in the theatre department at GVSU for a while and others are relatively new to acting but have some natural talent.
The musical director is trying to schedule rehearsals as early as this Saturday so that the cast (most of them) can start learning jury numbers as soon as possible. She has a conflict because she will be performing in an Opera when I start rehearsals in October so she is trying to get as much work done before she will have to be away for the first two weeks of full rehearsals.
So, the die had been cast.
Barring any interference from Rita, I will back home tomorrow evening.
