Philip Returns

So Philip returned to Nassau one day later than planned, because Tropical Storm Rita closed down Nassau Airport just before his flight via Atlanta was due to arrive. He spent the night in Atlanta and flew in today (Tuesday).

It seems that the auditions went better than he hoped they would. Over 70 people auditioned for Horse, and he called back 40 of them on the Sunday. He presently has 29 cast members, and the Musical Director is bringing in a baritone-bass to make the cast 30.

What’s even more interesting is that GVSU is looking into the possibility of bringing the playwright in closer to the run! What was a good opportunity for exposure for Bahamian theatre is getting better and better.

While there, Philip met a Jamaican professor who was responsible for forming a relationship between the University of the West Indies and GVSU through the auspices of Prof. Rex Nettleford. With COB’s new interest in the performing arts, it might be a good idea to think about seeking to establish a similar relationship here.

And there’s another professor whose specialty is multicultural theatre, and who has published a number of textbooks and collections in the field. He’s interested in new Caribbean works, and actively seeks them out. He visits the Caribbean now and again for this purpose. Philip told him about CARIFESTA (the Caribbean Festival of the Arts), which is gearing up to become a biannual festival (i.e. every two years). The next one’s supposed to take place in 2006 in Trinidad and Tobago. (The Bahamas is angling to host it in the near future; watch this space.) He’s now thinking of going to check it out.

So things are moving!
