R. I. P. George Mackey

George William Mackey, a true Bahamian gentleman, passed away this morning. We were saddened to hear about his passing and we offer condolences to his family.

The following bio was obtained from the website of Cable Bahamas, where Mr. Mackey served as a director:

“Mr. Mackey was a resident of Nassau and had a distinguished public services career spanning 25 years as a Member of the House of Assembly serving the St. Michael’s Constituency from 1972 to 1987 and the Fox Hill Constituency from 1987 to 1997. During his tenure in the House of Assembly, Mr. Mackey served as Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly and Minister of Housing and National Insurance. Mr. Mackey has also served as Chairman of the Housing Commission, Chairman of the Bahamas Electricity Corporation, Chairman of National Insurance Board, and was a member of both Constituency Boundaries Commission and the Committee for the Prerogative of Mercy. His contribution to the athletic community was highlighted during his twelve-year tenure as President of the Bahamas Baseball Association during which time the Association became financially secure. In 1998, Mr. Mackey was honoured by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and made an Officer of the Most Distinguished Order of the British Empire in recognition of his public service. Mr. Mackey was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Antiquities, Monuments and Museums Corporation and Co-chairman of the Nassau Economic Development Commission.”

He will be missed.
