Passings

2006 was not a good year for the Bahamian cultural community, and especially for the Bahamian theatrical community. The deaths of Leo Roberts and Sean Hanna at the end of 2005 were harbingers of things to come; if we were paying attention, we might’ve noticed that the raven was hoarse back then.
2006 began with the passing of George Mackey, who, while not active in the cultural or theatrical arena, was a great supporter of all things Bahamian, a staunch ally, a preservationist, and a great man.
The cultural community was even harder hit by the passing of Kayla Edwards in May. It was rocked again by the death of Angela Scott in August, and then once again in November by Winston Saunders‘ death.
So here’s to them all. May they rest in peace — and may we never forget them.

George Mackey was indeed a great supporter of all things Bahamian. There is another politician who passed last year who we should remember as a great supporter of culture and the cultural community and that person is The Hon. Livingston N. Coakley or Sir Coaks as most people called him.
Other passings in the cultural community to add to the list above would be Wendell Armbrister (aka Swain of Swain & The Citations), Jane “Baby Doll” Clarke and Gordon Lowe (who was not only a radio broadcaster but actually acted once in a play at the Dundas).
