CARIFESTA Festival Series

In preparation for CARIFESTA X 2008, which is being hosted by The Bahamas, Cultural Affairs is holding a CARIFESTA Festival Series, a series of performances and concerts aimed at raising funds, public awareness, and sponsorship, corporate or otherwise, for the CARIFESTA effort.

Those of us in the cultural world know we have a LOT of work to do.  We haven’t got a decent theatre in the capital that is easy or affordable for Bahamians to use.  The Dundas needs plenty of work; the Centre for the Performing Arts is still a glorified cinema; and the Rainforest appears to be reserved for the work of fourth-rate Las Vegas-style shows.  If we’re going to begin to host the Festival, we have to get some spaces ready that we won’t be ashamed to share with our visitors.

Forget our visitors.  We need to get some spaces ready that we ourselves won’t be ashamed of.

The Festival Series kicks off with a visit from the Morgan State University Choir.  There’s a weekend of performances planned for February 2-4; keep your eyes peeled and your ears open.

As we know more, we’ll post it here.

What is the latest out of the Bahamas for Carifesta x? I am very interested in having a Caribbean Arts in th Diaspora (CARAID)contingent from Toronto attend the festival and for festival organizers to see the validity of Caribbean artists in such cities as Toronto, Montreal, New York, London, Birmingham, Amsterdam etc having a contribution to make at this important Caribbean arts festival.

Please let me know how we can begin a discussion on our participation from Toronto. This is all very crucial now so as to coincide with funding requirements from our respective arts councils and foreign affairs division.

Importantly, what are the dates for the festival?
