National Dance Company/Alvin Ailey Performance

For those of you who were unable to attend on Monday and Tuesday, please know that the performance was very good. I caught the National Dance Company’s half, and, having seen them perform last year in Trinidad, this year in the spring, and this fall, I can say without bias that Director Robert Bain and Associate Director LeKeisha Bostwick are doing wonders.
The show was very good. The members of the Company have grown technically and interpretively, and are able to accomplish a number of things that have become very rare in Bahamian dance these days. One of the most impressive (though apparently trivial) is their ability to move as a corps de ballet. The challenge of matching everyone else’s movements is a huge one, something akin to learning how to sing in one voice, only more difficult. The accomplishment of individuals is easier to create. The Director is achieving something great here.
It’s also been a long time since Robert Bain has had the opportunity of having dancers who can execute his choreography, with the result that we have forgotten what a gifted choreographer he is. The company he has built this time is able to show off his vision. We are very lucky.
Finally, the National Dance Company has established a relationship with the Alvin Ailey Company that will be beneficial to both sides. Congratulations go out to Robert Bain for his vision, his determination, and his achievement.
